The Art of the Vase

An author-led ceramic course in hand-building for adults, held over three sessions

Saturday, 12 September · 3:00–7:00 PM
Sunday, 13 September · 3:00–7:00 PM
Wednesday, 16 September · 4:30–7:30 PM

The Art of the Vase is designed for those who don't simply want to try ceramics, but want to immerse themselves more deeply in the process of creating a ceramic object.

Over three sessions, I will guide you through the process of creating your own designer vase – from the first spark of an idea (or the lack of one) through building the form and working with proportions, all the way to the final surface.

We will explore how to think about an object as a whole, how to work with shape, volume and proportion, and how to create a piece that has its own distinctive character.

The course is intended primarily for people who already have some basic experience with ceramics and would like to develop their skills further. It is not designed for complete beginners.

Participation in this course requires previous experience with hand-building ceramics. You must have either attended a Hands, Clay & Wine or Saturday Slow Mornings workshop at Muoi Atelier, or have gained experience with ceramic modelling elsewhere.

During the programme, you will create your own ceramic vase, which will go through the complete process at Muoi Atelier – from modelling to glazing and firing.

How the programme works

Session 1 · Saturday, 12 September · 3:00–7:00 PM

Working with the concept, shape and basic construction of the vase.

Session 2 · Sunday, 13 September · 3:00–7:00 PM

Building and refining the object.

Session 3 · Wednesday, 16 September · 4:30–7:30 PM

Vase detailing – working with details and surface.

You will have the opportunity to add various 3D textures to the surface of your vase or decorate it using engobes.

Total programme duration: 11 hours over 3 sessions.

Your vase needs time

You won't be taking your finished piece home at the end of the course :) Clay needs time.

Your vase will slowly dry over the following 6–8 weeks. Once completely dry, I will fire your piece twice.

Your finished vase will be ready for personal collection approximately 8 weeks after the course.
